H.M.S. E 3 was one of fifty-seven "E" class submarines completed in Britain before and during the Great War.

Service

In early September, 1914, E 3 had the temeritous good fortune to manage to capture a German seaplane and her two crewmen when she surfaced alongside the surprised airmen after they'd landed their plane. However, on 18 October, luck abandoned her when she was stalked while participating in the Western Ems patrol by U 27, which had cleverly positioned herself up-sun to close to 800 yards before firing. E 3 sank rapidly and the German submarine did not stop to pick up survivors.[6]
