U.S.S. Robert L. Barnes was a tanker purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1918.
Construction
Robert L. Barnes was begun by the McDougall Duluth Ship Building Co. for the Robert Barnes Steam Ship Co. during 1917. She was purchased by the United States Shipping Board on 29 June, 1918 and transferred to the U.S. Navy on the same day for conversion to an oiler.
Service
Robert L. Barnes commissioned at New York on 19 October, 1918. She remained under the control of the Third Naval District until she was ready for sea. Her first commanding officer was Lieutenant George C. Daniels, U.S.N.R.F., who took command on 29 January, 1919.
