Admiral Seymour Elphinstone Erskine, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (23 June, 1863 – 23 February, 1945) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

He came nineteenth in order of merit out of forty-two candidates who passed the examination for naval cadetships.[1]

For his services in Benin, Erskine was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 25 May, 1897.[2]

On 31 December, 1902 he was promoted to the rank of Captain.[3] On 12 January, 1907, he was appointed in command of H.M.S. Bedford. He was appointed in command of the Warrior, depôt ship at Portsmouth, on 30 August, 1903.[4]

Erskine was appointed to Pembroke as Commodore, Second Class for command of the Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham on 1 August, 1911.[5] He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 21 March, 1913, vice Galloway.[6] He was placed on the Retired List on 12 August, 1915, to take up the appointment of Rear-Admiral, Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham.[7]

Erskine was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 30 January, 1918.[8] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 5 July, 1921.[9]
