H.M.S. Tartar was one of twelve destroyers of the "Tribal" class.

Service

In mid-1913, operating with the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla.[7]

In 1914, Tartar collided with H.M.S. Saracen while crossing the other destroyer's known line of patrol. Tartar's Lieutenant-Commander Edwards would be faulted in the event. He would leave the ship in a frazzled state in April, and presently be discharged from the service for alcoholism.[8]

Tartar was heavily damaged by a German mine in the Dover Strait on 24 June, 1917. Forty-three of her crew were killed, including her recently-appointed captain, Guy Kemble Twiss. Paddle sweepers Redcar and Kempton were also sunk in the same minefield.[9]

Radio

In 1909, she became one of forty-three destroyers so far fitted with Destroyer Sets.[10]

Guns

By 1912-13, her five 12-pdr P. I mountings bore register numbers 151, 152, 216, 217, and 218. The first two of these were fitted with "Training Gear".[11]
