H.M.S. Platypus was completed to navy order as a depot ship. Originally intended to support the Australian submarines AE 1 and AE 2, she became available after they were lost and was then commissioned in the Royal Navy.

Service

Platypus served with British submarines at Harwich throughout the war.[5]

She was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in March of 1919, becoming H.M.A.S. Platypus.

Platypus was re-commissioned on 13 July, 1922.[6]

Re-commissioned on 14 January, 1925.[7]
