The Persian Gulf is a fetch of water south of the modern nation of Iran, east of Iraq's compact coastline, and north of Saudi Arabia. It continues to be a vital choke-point for commerce and particularly now of oil export. It was one of the bodies of water into which the Royal Navy had to project force at all points in her history, not least during the Great War. For the British, it was often treated as a sub-component of the East Indies Station.
History
In Command
The Senior Officer, Persian Gulf served in the station's flagship. By November, 1919, this was the hired yacht Triad. When Vernon Saumarez Butler was appointed Senior Officer in 1935, the sloop Shoreham took over as flagship.
