Commander R.N.R. (retired) Douglas George Jeffrey, M.B.E., D.S.O., R.N.R. (23 September, 1885 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve. He had also been awarded an R.D., but this was forfeited in June 1928.[1]
Life & Career
Jeffrey was tried by a two-day Court Martial in February, 1914 and was severely reprimanded for having hazarded the armoured cruiser King Alfred in a collision with the Spanish steamer Umbre which sank the other ship.[2][3]
Jeffrey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 December, 1914.[4]
In 1918, Admiral Wake called to commend Jeffrey for service in the R.N., as he had been impressed by Jeffrey when both men were in Formidable.[5]
Jeffrey was demobilised on 12 February, 1920 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 1 December, 1922.[6]
Jeffrey was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 7 June, 1927.[7]
World War II
In 1939, it was reported that he had been employed by Canadian Naval Authorities. He commanded three R.C.N. ships during the conflict.[8]
