Lieutenant R.N.R. Athol Edwin Gudgeon (21 February, 1885 – 27 August, 1917) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Early in the war, Gudgeon was serving in the requisitioned auxiliary, Duchess of Devonshire.

Gudgeon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 2 August, 1915.[1]

Gudgeon was appointed in command of the destroyer Ettrick on 27 June, 1917 and was wounded on 7 July, 1917 when she was mined and damaged in the English Channel with the loss of forty-eight men killed outright. His injury would also prove fatal, as he died on 27 August.[2][3]

His death is not noted in his Service Record, perhaps owing to some confusion, as on 5 November, 1919, it is simply recorded that he was "no longer in the Navy List".
