Captain (retired) Edmund Henry Buckingham Baker, D.S.O. (7 September, 1900 – 1983) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of E. E. Baker, Esq., stockbroker.[1]
Baker passed out of the Training Establishment and was appointed to the battlecruiser Indomitable on 7 May, 1917. He was admitted to Granton hospital for a bullet wound in his right leg. He was released, fit for duty, on 12 April. In February, 1919 he was appointed to Warspite.[2]
Baker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1922.[3]
In January 1927, he was qualified as a Second-class Assistant Surveyor.
Baker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1930.[4]
He commanded the surveying ship Challenger from 10 November 1931 to January, 1932. He continued to serve in the ship as Assistant Surveyor, First Class.[5]
Baker was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1936. He would again command Challenger and be in charge of her surveying work from 1937 through October 1939, vice Jones.[6]
He commanded the surveying ship Scott from 7 October, 1939 to 15 April, 1940.[7]
World War II
On 20 September 1943, he was appointed to the naval base Nile at Alexandria, additional, as Senior British Naval Officer, Aegean, serving in the acting rank of Captain while holding the appointment.
