Rear Admiral Seth Mitchell Ackley (13 October, 1845 – 7 February, 1908) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Massachusetts, Ackley was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state as a member of the Class of 1866.[1] In 1863, while still attending the Academy, he participated in a search for a Confederate raider while aboard Marion.[2]

Ackley was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 12 March, 1868. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 21 March, 1870.[3]

Ackley spent many years with the Coast Survey, including his first command, the schooner Eagre from 1878 to 1880.[4] This was later followed by service as the Hydrographic Inspector in the Coast and Geodetic Survey office in 1892 and 1893.[5]

Ackley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 30 June, 1887.[6]

In December 1893, Ackley was appointed to command the gunboat Yantic and remained with the ship on the South Atlantic Station until approximately October 1895.[7]

Ackley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 May 1896.[8]

During the Spanish-American War Ackley served as Naval Secretary to the Lighthouse Board.[9] He returned to sea as Commanding Officer of the gunboat Concord from 25 September, 1899.[10] This command likely lasted until mid-1900.[11]

On 25 October, 1901, Ackley was placed on the retired list due to disability incident to the service and was promoted one rank to Captain as per the Act of March 3, 1899.[12]

However, this did not end his career. An Act of Congress restored him to the Active List as a Captain on 8 April, 1904.[13] He then served as Commandant of Naval Station Cavite and Naval Reservation Subic Bay, as well as commanding officer of the station ship Mohican.[14] This tour of duty ended in January, 1906.[15]

Ackley was promoted to Rear Admiral on 24 February, 1907.[16] He apparently did not see active service in this rank, being reported as seriously ill in hospital in April 1907.[17]
