---|---|
Builder: | Raylton Dixon, Middlesbrough[1] |
Launched: | 9 Dec, 1882[2] |
Sold: | 1925[3] |
H.M.S. Dolphin was one of two Dolphin Class composite screw sloops completed for the Royal Navy. She served as a submarine depot ship in the Great War.
Service
Dolphin was commissioned at Sheerness on 1 May, 1884.[4]
In 1907, Dolphin was made an accommodation ship for submarines.[5]
In April, 1911, Dolphin was the depot ship of the Portsmouth Submarine Flotilla, which then consisted of four "A" and one "D" class submarines.[6]
She became an independent command in Portsmouth on 31 August, 1912 under Captain Roger J. B. Keyes, Commodore 2nd Class in charge of Submarine Service.[7]
In mid-1913, Dolphin was servicing the Second Submarine Flotilla[8] and was still doing so at the outset of the war. In September 1916, she moved over to assist the Sixth Submarine Flotilla until the end of the war.[9]
On 15 October, 1924, the somewhat more youthful H.M.S. Pandora took on the name and duties of Dolphin as parent ship to the submarines at Fort Blockhouse.[10]
