Captain Roe Reed Adams, (5 April, 1879 – 23 July, 1955) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Adams was born in Illinois and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1902.[1][2]

He received the normal course of promotions early in his career, being promoted to the rank of Ensign on 2 May, 1904,[3] to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 May, 1907,[4], and to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1914.[5]

Great War

Adams was promoted to the temporary rank of Commander on 31 August, 1917,[6] and to the permanent rank of Commander on 1 July, 1919.[7] By the time of the latter promotion, he had served as commanding officer of the transport Pretoria in early 1919.[8]

From June, 1919 to June 1921 he served as commanding officer of Niagara.[9][10]

Interwar Era

Adams commanded a destroyer division from 1923 to 1925, and was promoted to the rank of Captain on 4 June, 1925.[11] In 1928 he assumed command of the transport Henderson for two years.[12][13] His final sea command was of Arkansas from 1933 to 1934.[14]

Ashore, he served as Captain of the Yard at the Boston Navy Yard from 1932 to 1933, and at the New York Navy Yard from 1934 to 1937.[15][16][17][18]

Passed over for promotion, Adams was placed on the Retired List on 30 June, 1937.[19]
