Captain R.N.R. (retired) Gordon Lewis Simner, R.D. (28 December, 1879 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Simner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 October, 1909. In 1912, he was awarded a medal by the Italian government for his service in the aftermath of the Messina earthquake.[1]

Simner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 1 October, 1917. In March 1918 he was appointed as Commodore of Convoys, but this was presently cancelled and he was assigned to President for convoy duties, where he remained engaged for two months.[2]

Simner was appointed in command of the destroyer Mystic on 20 December, 1918.[3]

Simner was promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 31 December, 1921.[4]

Simner was placed on the Retired List on account of age and granted the rank of Captain R.N.R. (retired) on 28 December, 1929.[5]

World War II

Simner was mobilised on 2 September 1939. He saw duties at Milford Haven and Avonmouth. In 1948, he reported that he was employed on the staff of King George's Fund for Sailors, and was available for home service only. For a man nearing 70 yers of age, this was laudable.[6]
