Acting Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. Peter Shaw, D.S.C. (24 March, 1882 – 21 April, 1918) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Shaw was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 27 May, 1911.[1]
At the outset of the war, Shaw was placed in the armed merchant cruiser Marmora. He remained in her through January, 1916. In April, he was appointed to the battleship Royal Sovereign.[2]
Shaw was appointed in command of the destroyer Sylvia in mid 1916, possibly as early as 12 May, 1916. He handled the boat well and was recommended for a larger command. In particular, he rendered good service on the occasion of the 1916 loss of the Dutch steamship Duiseland[?].[3]
Shaw died when he was overcome by fumes from a coal stove installed in his cabin, possibly in Sylvia, when there was no ventilation provided. A post-mortem examination on 25 April, 1918 confirmed this finding.[4]
