H.M.S. Diamond was one of four third class cruisers of the "Gem" class completed in 1904 and 1905.

Service

Diamond was the first vessel to be launched after the amalgamation of Charles Cammell & Co. and Laird Brothers.[8]

Re-commissioned on 24 August, 1909 under command of Captain G. M. Paine.[9]

She completed to Active Complement at Chatham 7 November, 1913.[10]

In July 1914, she was operating as part of the Sixth Battle Squadron, but in September, 1914, she joined the Fifth Battle Squadron. In April, 1915, she left to join the Third Battle Squadron, but did not sortie with them at the Battle of Jutland. She would remain with them, however, until the squadron was abolished on 20 April, 1918.

Diamond paid off at Chatham on 3 June, 1919.[11]

Alterations

In October 1914, the ship was to be given 6 Pattern 1582 Electric Radiators to warm cabins whose stoves could not be used for heating them.[28]
