Admiral SIR John Durnford, G.C.B., D.S.O., Royal Navy (6 February, 1849 – 13 June, 1914) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

John Durnford was a son of the Reverend Francis E. Durnford, a Fellow of Eton and Rector of Creeting St. Mary, Suffolk. After studying at Eton, Durnford entered the Royal Navy, being appointed to the training ship Britannia on 9 September, 1862.

On 8 August, 1882, he was appointed Commander of H.M.S. Vernon, torpedo school ship at Portsmouth.[1]

For operations in Burma Durnford was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) on 13 January, 1887.[2]

Durnford was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1888.[3]

He was appointed Captain of H.M.S. Vernon on 12 November, 1895. [4]

In the Queen's Diamond Jubilee honours, Durnford was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 22 June, 1897.[5]

Durnford was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 January, 1902.[6]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 18 October, 1906, vice Campbell.[7] He was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 9 November.[8]

Durnford succeeded Admiral Sir Arthur D. Fanshawe as President of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich on 23 March, 1908.[9] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 22 July, 1910, vice MacLeod.[10] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 10 May, 1913.[11]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the First Class, or Knight Grand Cross, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) on 3 June, 1913.[12]
