Louis Kempff (October 11, 1841 – July 29, 1920) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Louis Kempff was born on October 11, 1841 to Friedrich and Henrietta Kempff of Bellville, Illinois.[1] He entered the U.S. Navy as a Naval Academy cadet on 25 September, 1857.[2] In April 1861, with the outbreak of the Civil War, Kempff was ordered to the sailing sloop-of-war Vandalia which left New York in June to blockade Charleston. When the Vandalia captured the schooner Henry Middleton, Kempff brought the prize to New York before rejoining Vandalia at Hampton Roads. Kempff was appointed Acting Master in October 1861.[3]
Kempff was present aboard Vandalia for the Battle of Port Royal on 7 November, 1861, and was transferred to the receiving ship Wabash on 11 November.[4]
Kempff was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 August, 1862.[5]
Kempff was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 26 July, 1866.[6]
Kempff was promoted to the rank of Commander on 9 March, 1876.[7]
Kempff was promoted to the rank of Captain on 19 May, 1891.[8]
Kempff was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 3 March, 1899. Soon afterwards he took over as Commandant of the Mare Island Navy Yard on 15 May, 1899, remaining there until April 1900, when he was appointed Squadron Commander, Asiatic Fleet on 18 April.[9]
