The office of '''Fifth Sea Lord''' was created on 10 January, 1917 as '''Director of Naval Aviation''' with responsibility for the [[Royal Naval Air Service]].  However, with the merging of the RNAS with the Royal Flying Corps on 3 January, 1918 and control of the newly formed Royal Air Force devolving to a newly empowered Air Ministry the position was disbanded until being re-created in the 1930s with responsibility for the Fleet Air Arm.
The ''Fifth Sea Lord''' was a member of the Board of Admiralty between 1917 and 1918.


There was only one Fifth Sea Lord pre-1918;
