The ship was originally laid down as the Ersatz Odin but was launched as the Prinzregent Luitpold. She was launched on 18 February, 1912 by Princess Therese, daughter of the Prince Regent of Bavaria for whom the ship was named. In attendance at the Germania yards in Kiel were the Kaiser Wilhelm II, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, Prince Heinrich of Prussia and Großadmiral von Tirpitz.
