Audley Wells Morton
Midshipman Audley Wells Morton, R.N. (5 August, 1874 – 18 July, 1893) was an officer of the Royal Navy. He seemed a promising officer, but he died before he got started.
Life & Career
The eldest son of Colonel Morton, who commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Border Regiment.
Morton entered the training ship H.M.S. Britannia in January, 1889, having ranked second of forty-five successful candidates for naval cadetships with 1,279 marks.[1]
Morton was promoted to the rank of Midshipman with seniority of 15 January, 1891.[2]
Morton didn't get very far in the Navy. His service record indicates that his name was removed from the Navy List "as it is thought that he is unfit for further service."
Morton died in mid-1893, aged just eighteen, at the residence of his uncle, J. Heywood Johnstone, M.P.. No further detail is provided.[3]
