H.M.S. Osprey was one of forty "C" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "30 knotter".

In mid-1913, active with Sixth Destroyer Flotilla.[8]

The conflict between Petre and Brown is a bit of a mystery. Brown's claim is echoed by a Navy List (which same List has Petre as executive officer in Blenheim from 19 June, 1908[42]), but Petre's Service Record contains a second note indicating his desire to go on reduced pay after being relieved in Osprey.
