Captain John Robert Sutherland Haines, C.B.E. (19 November, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of John Haines, a tutor. He served in battlecruiser Lion from the outbreak of war to 4 April, 1916, when he was assigned to the destroyer Lurcher. On 5 October, 1916 he was sent back to Lion.[1]

Haines was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1917. He left Lion on 5 March 1919.[2]

Haines was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1925.[3]

Haines was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1931.[4]

Haines was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1939.[5]

World War II

Haines commanded the Armed Merchant Cruiser Asturias from 25 November, 1939 to 24 October, 1940.[6]

He was placed on the Retired List on 10 July, 1948.[7]
