Commander (retired) Alwyne Gervase Olliver, (23 October, 1893 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Olliver's father had also served in the Navy, but had retired as a Sub-Lieutenant.
Olliver was awarded the Beaufort and Wharton Testimonials for 1914 and the Ronald Megaw Memorial Prize for 1914-15.[1]
Olliver showed good seamanship when he rescued the crew of a lighter while serving aboard the destroyer Acheron in March 1915. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1915. However, on 12 June 1916, a Court of Enquiry found that he "carried out his duties as Executive Officer in Mischief in a cavalier and casual manner, that he was ignorant of the Regulations and had a poor apprefciation of the place of Discipline and procedure." It was recommended that he be transferred to a large ship.[2]
On 28 August, 1918, he was Court Martialled for some impropriety regarding the cash award he was due for the Megaw prize.[3]
Olliver was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1923. On 1 April, 1926, he was appointed acting Commander of the light cruiser H.M.S. Danae.[4]
Olliver was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 April, 1931 and promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) on 23 October, 1933.[5]
World War II
In 1939, he was admonished for his tone in communication to the Admiralty Department in connection ith some matter involving his children.[6]
In 1941, he incurred displeasure by "continuing to write to Admiralty Dept. in an offensive tone." He appealed this rebuke and was refused.[7]
