H.M.S. Maidstone was completed to navy order as a depot ship.
Service
Maidstone commissioned at Portsmouth and served with submarines at Harwich throughout the war.[6]

- Captain Frank Brandt, 15 October, 1912, and in command of Eighth Submarine Flotilla.[7]
- Captain Arthur K. Waistell, 1 September, 1913, and in command of Eighth Submarine Flotilla[8]
- Captain Albert P. Addison, C.M.G., 14 August, 1917, remaining in her through the end of the war and as Captain (S) Ninth Submarine Flotilla[9]
- Commander Geoffrey Layton, D.S.O., July, 1920, and in command of Eighth Submarine Flotilla[10]
