Charles FitzGerald Sowerby
Captain Charles FitzGerald Sowerby, Royal Navy (31 July, 1866 – 31 May, 1916) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Charles FitzGerald Sowerby was the eldest son of Thomas C. J. Sowerby.[1]
On 9 September, 1891 he was appointed to Vernon.[2] In the mobilisation of 1892 he hoisted his pendant in T.B. 83.[3] On 15 August he was appointed Torpedo Lieutenant of the Narcissus.[4] Four years later, on 5 June, 1896 he was re-appointed to Vernon.[5] he was appointed to the Defiance on 18 August.[6]
He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1900.[7] On 29 December, 1903, he was appointed to the training ship Britannia at Dartmouth.[8]
Sowerby was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1905,[9] and on 3 January he was appointed to the Isis, in command.[10]
He was appointed in command of the heavy cruiser Cumberland on 20 April, 1907.[11]
On 11 July, 1908 he was temporarily appointed to the Naval Intelligence Department,[12] and on 11 November he succeeded Captain the Honourable Horace L. A. Hood as Naval Attaché in the United States of America.[13] He was relieved by Captain Heathcoat S. Grant on 1 June, 1912.[14]
He was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Indefatigable on 24 February, 1913,[15] and was killed when she was destroyed at the Battle of Jutland.[16]
