Captain R.N.R. (retired) Wallace Edgar Whittingham, O.B.E., R.D. (24 February, 1874 – 2 March, 1951) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Whittingham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 20 October, 1904.[1]

Whittingham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 20 October, 1912.[Inference]

Whittingham was promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 20 October, 1914.[2]

After some time in command of the overflow hulk Egmont, Whittingham was transferred to command the balloon ship Manica, with someone named H. C. Gaunt praising him as an "exceptionally smart officer."[3]

In 1917, it was reported that his supervision in Manica was "lax". After handing over command of the ship in mid-1917, he departed Port Said for home in the P. & O. steamer Nanking on 13 July. He inquired about a transfer to the Kite Balloon Section of the R.N.A.S., but he was unwilling to accept the rank of Flight Commander, which would require him to wear a lesser uniform. He was instead sent to Attentive to be the senior officer of some Motor Launches, and then to Dunkirk to assist the Commodore in berthing and coaling arrangements.[4]

Demobilised on 14 June 1919 (post-dated to 23 June), Whittingham was placed on the Retired List on account of age with the rank of Captain R.N.R. on 24 February, 1924.[5]

World War II

In 1948, Whittingham reported that he was living in Watford, Herts. He considered himself fit for Home Service, if required.[6]
