Commander William Herschell Allen, (1856 – 26 December, 1905) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Allen was born in New York but was appointed to the Naval Academy from Illinois, graduating with the class of 1876.[1] He received the normal course of promotions over the years. Allen was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 25 November, 1877, to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 13 July, 1884, and to the rank of Lieutenant on 5 March, 1890,[2]
During the Spanish-American War Allen served aboard battleship Oregon.[3][4] He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 3 March, 1899,[5]
Allen was appointed to his only seagoing command, armed yacht Vixen, from September 1903 to May 1904.[6][7]
Allen was promoted to the rank of Commander on 23 November, 1904, while in charge of the Naval Magazine at Fort Mifflin, Pennsylvania.[8] Just over a year later, Allen died of heart disease at the Naval Home in Philadelphia.[9][10]
