Assistant Engineer was a rank in the Engineer Branch of the Royal Navy from 1847 to 1903.

History

The rank of Assistant Engineer was established in 1847 and divided into three classes. They were appointed by Order and ranked with, but after, Second Masters.[1] By authority of Order in Council of 16 April, 1861, Assistant Engineer, 1st Class was renamed Engineer; Assistant Engineer, 2nd Class became Assistant Engineer 1st Class; and Assistant Engineer, 3rd Class became Assistant Engineer, 2nd Class.[2] Under the Queen's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions of 1861, Assistant Engineer, 1st Class was a rank nominated by commission and Assistant Engineer, 2nd Class, by order. Both ranked with Midshipmen.[3]

From 1 April, 1877, the ranks of Assistant Engineer of the First and Second Class were merged into one class, styled Assistant Engineer. After four years' service they were allowed to pass for the rank of Engineer and after five years' service were to be eligible for promotion. They were to rank with but after Sub-Lieutenants.[4]

The rank of Assistant Engineer was re-styled Engineer Sub-Lieutenant from 1 April, 1903.[5]
