Dan Sheppard

Chief Petty Officer Dan Sheppard, D.S.M. (22 May, 1881 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Badgeworth, Gloucestershire, Sheppard was employed as a gardner before joining the Navy in May 1899.[1]

Promoted to the rank of Petty Officer on 1 March, 1911, Sheppard was appointed to the battlecruiser H.M.S. Lion on 4 June, 1912. He functioned as the ship's Director Layer at the Battle of Jutland, in the wake of which he was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, dated 31 May, 1916.[2]

Sheppard left Lion when he was appointed to New Zealand on 1 April 1920. He moved over to Hercules on 18 May. On 1 October, he was appointed to shore duties that would persist until 1923.[3]
