David Thorburn Graham-Brown
Captain (retired) David Thorburn Graham-Brown, M.V.O. (27 December, 1883 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Edinburgh, the son of a physician.[1]
Graham-Brown was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1904.[2]
In March 1905 He was awarded the Goodenough Medal for 1904[?] for being the Sub-Lieutenant who achieved the highest gunnery examination while also achieving a first-class certificate in seamanship.[3]
In 1910, Graham-Brown invented an instrument for "automatically obtaining the deflection after altering course." Notably, his invention was to undergo trials.[4]
Graham-Brown was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 July, 1912. In 1913, he was appointed to the pre-dreadnought battleship King Edward VII, and he served as her gunnery officer, and then first and gunnery officer until she was lost on 6 January 1916, when he was commended for getting her "boats out very smartly under most difficult conditions".[5]
Graham-Brown was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1914.[6]
Graham-Brown was appointed to the super-dreadnought H.M.S. Royal Oak in January, 1916, to serve as her gunnery officer upon her commissioning. He would retain this role until being sent to Excellent on 1 May 1918 to serve as Experimental Commander.[7]
Graham-Brown was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 27 December, 1929.[8]
