Francis Nigel Miles
Captain (retired) Francis Nigel Miles, O.B.E., R.N. (4 May, 1886 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Brisbane, Queensland.
Miles was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 August, 1908.[1]
At the outset of war, Miles served in the first class protected cruiser Theseus as navigating officer. In December 1914 he was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Oropesa, being soon thereafter loaned back to Theseus. These proved very brief; Miles was appointed to the light cruiser Phaeton as navigating officer on 15 January 1915 and served through the end of the war, seeing action at the Battle of Jutland as part of the First Light Cruiser Squadron and being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 August, 1916.[2]
Miles was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1920.[3]
Miles was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 16 August, 1932.[4]
