Captain (retired) Frederick Claude Hynman Allenby, C.B.E., R.N. (21 September, 1864 – 1 August, 1934) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Felixstow.

Allenby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 August, 1887.

Allenby appointed to Scylla as first lieutenant on 28 May, 1896. While in this appointment, he was Court Martialed aboard Gibraltar at Corfu on 8 August, 1897 for striking a Petty Officer named Thomas Calloway with a stick. Captain Percy Scott prosecuted the case, in which it was charged that Allenby had found Calloway asleep when he returned aboard at 2.30 on 31 July. Allenby pleaded guilty without evidence being called for.[1] Allenby was severely reprimanded and dismissed the ship.

Allenby was sent to H.M.S. Excellent for a short course of Gunnery, receiving a first-class certificate in December. He next served in the destroyer Phoebe on the Cape of Good Hope Station from mid January, 1898 to 25 March 1899.

Allenby was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1900.

He was appointed to the battleship Vengeance on 8 April, 1902 for service in the Mediterranean and China, but he was invalided from Malta in late June 1903 following anemia caused by a severe attack of neuralgia.

On 9 November 1904, he was appointed to the Berwick Coast Guard. This appointment was extended, ending only when Allenby was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 24 December, 1909.

In a marginal state of health, Allenby would work in the Transport Service in Liverpool and Southampton during the Great War. On 10 May, 1919 it was decided that he would revert to the Retired List on 24 May.
