Godfrey Noel Brewer
Captain Godfrey Noel Brewer, D.S.O., R.N. (17 March, 1901 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
As with many men born c. 1899 or later, his Service Records at The National Archives do not reflect activity between 1931 and 1939 or so.
Life & Career
Brewer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1922.[1]
He served in H.M.S. Royal Sovereign from September 1917 through the end of the war.
Brewer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1930.[2]
In March and April, 1934, he spent a month in Whitehall at Wei-hai-wei and then took her to Shanghai and Hong Kong in mid to late April.[3]
Brewer was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1935.[4]
Brewer was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1943. He was awarded a D.S.O. on 19 October "for gallantry and devotion to duty in determined & successful attacks on U-boats."[5]
Shortly after the war, Captain Simpson wrote of Brewer, "An experiencedd small ship and destroyer commander who has done sterling work in command of 1st Escort Group, which has accounted for several U-boats this summer whilst acting as a Support Group. Captain Brewer's combination of intelligence and experience gives him very sound judgment and correct decision. A cheerful personality and natural leader. A gifted jazz pianist whose talents are a great asset to the life of his messmates ashore and afloat. Sound health." Admiral Horton concurred.[6]
