Harry Thring Bennett
Commander (retired) Harry Thring Bennett, D.S.O. (21 February, 1888 – ) served in the Royal Navy. Some Navy Lists call him "Henry".[1]
Life & Career
Born in Musselburgh, Scotland.[2]
Bennett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 July, 1909.[3][4]
Bennett served in the Royal Navy during World War I, being in the battleship H.M.S. Canopus at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914.[5]
Bennett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 July, 1917.[6][7]
In 1918, he was posted to Bermuda to become Master Attendant and King's Harbour Master.[8]
In 1920, he was being treated for syphilis.[9]
He transferred to the Royal Australian Navy and worked with the Hydrographic Branch, undertaking surveys of northern waters and of the Great Barrier Reef, taking command of the Australian surveying ship Geranium in 1924.
Bennett was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 21 February, 1929.[10]
World War II
He served as Commander of H.M.A.S. Platypus and then as Staff Officer in Sydney of the Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships.[11]
