John Essex Grey-Smith
Lieutenant-Commander John Essex Grey-Smith, R.N. (10 May, 1887 – 17 March, 1917) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born the son of a Reverend in St. Hilde, Victoria, Grey-Smith won a Colonial Cadetship.[1]
Grey-Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 December, 1907.[2]
Grey-Smith was appointed to the light cruiser H.M.A.S. Melbourne on 25 October, 1912 and would serve in her through 16 March, 1916, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 December, 1915. He returned to England in early June, 1916.[3]
Grey-Smith was appointed to the light cruiser H.M.S. Cambrian on 16 July, 1916. He was lost overboard and drowned on 17 March, 1917[4] perhaps in company with a Lieutenant Commander John E. G. Short, whom I cannot identify and suspect does not exist, owing to the similarity to "John E. Grey-Smith".[5]
