John Francis Murray-Aynsley
Captain (retired) John Francis Murray-Aynsley, R.N. (27 October, 1866 – 10 May, 1904) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
John Francis Murray-Aynsley was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 27 October, 1866. At the examinations for naval cadetships in June 1879, he placed fifth out of thirty-seven successful candidates.[1]
He was second of three men who qualified for the Beaufort Testimonial.
Murray-Aynsley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 27 April, 1888.[2]
He commanded an torpedo boat whose number is illegible in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1893.[3]
On 21 November, 1896, while Murray-Aynsley was serving as experimental officer at H.M.S. Excellent, he was badly burned on the legs and face when a rocket charge fired prematurely during testing at the practice ground at Eastney Barracks, Portsmouth. Two others were injured, one seriously and the other "disfigured." Muuray-Aynsley's condition improved rapidly.[4]
Murray-Aynsley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1898.[5]
After being diagnosed with chronic nephritis, Murray-Aynsley was placed on the Retired List as unfit at the rank of Captain on 8 October, 1903. He died in May of 1904.[6]
