Commander (retired) Maximilian Carden Despard, D.S.C., R.N. (30 March, 1892 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Captain H. J. Despard, the Chief Constable of Lanarkshire.

Despard was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 15 December, 1912.[1]

Despard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1914. He was appointed to H.M.S. Broke as gunnery officer on 24 March 1917. He was awarded a D.S.C. for his work as gunnery officer in the ship, controlling gunfire and giving orders which were thought to have resulted in an enemy destroyer being torpedoed in the Battle of Dover Strait on the night of 20-21 April, 1917. It appears to be commonly thought that it was Swift that scored a torpedo hit on this night.[2]

Despard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1922.[3]

Placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 20 June, 1928, Despard was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 March, 1932.[4]
