Montague Wriothesley Noel
Commander (retired) Montague Wriothesley Noel, (12 November, 1892 – 6 April, 1941) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born the son of Rear-Admiral (later Admiral) Francis Charles Methuen Noel joined Royal Naval College, Osborne in the September, 1905 intake term.
He was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for lifesaving at sea, in this case an R.N.R. stoker in Hindustan on 3 February 1916. He would add a clasp to the award in December, 1917 for a second incident at Immingham.[1]
In 1911 and 1912, he had medical issues that indicated nervous strain, but he was explcitly not found to exhibit signs of "neurasthenia", as such things commonly were at the time.[2]
Noel was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1915.[3]
Noted as a "gd organizer" with "gd manner", Noel was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1923.[4]
Noel was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 21 January, 1936.[5]
World War II
He commanded the yacht Anna Mane[?] from 16 November, 1940 and is presumed killed in command.
Personal Life
Noel married Christabel Florence Arthur Startin and had four children.
