Norman Leven Russell Bell
Lieutenant-Commander Norman Leven Russell Bell, R.N. (28 February, 1883 – 9 July, 1917) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of a substitute sheriff, Bell was born in Edinburgh.[1]
Bell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1905. The Admiralty expressed its displeasure with Bell following a 1905 collision between the gunvessel Landrail and the trawler Silent.[2]
Bell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1913.[3]
Bell was appointed to the battleship H.M.S. Vanguard on 26 September, 1913 as navigator. Like several of her wartime officers, he remained in her a considerable time, fighting in her at the Battle of Jutland. Unfortunately, Bell's tenure proved too long, as died when she blew up in Scapa Flow on 9 July, 1917.[4]
