Robert Leal Jermain

Captain (retired) Robert Leal Jermain, (11 November, 1882 – ) served in the Royal Navy. He was also a Captain in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Halifax, the son of Retired Captain E. J. Jermain, R.N.. Jermain gained four months time on passing out of Britannia in September 1898. He first served in the second class battleship Barfleur on the China Station, and for his services there with the Naval Brigade was recommended for accelerated promotion by the Commander-in-Chief. He took passage home in H.M.S. Centurion in 1901.

He served in Mars in the Channel, until April 1902. Captain Jellicoe reported that he had "not very high abilities, but is a young officer of great coolness." Jermain joined College on 26 April, 1902.

Jermain was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1904.

Jermain portrayed the titular character "Jane" the housemaid in "Jane: A Farce in 3 Acts" in a performance in October 1907 aboard H.M.S. Magnificent.[1]

Jermain was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 January, 1912. He was appointed to Hercules of the Second Battle Squadron in February, 1913. He was to leave her for command of a sloop on the China Station on the outbreak of war, but these orders were cancelled and he fought in Hercules at the Battle of Jutland.

Jermain was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1917. On 14 July, he was appointed from Hercules to the armoured cruiser Minotaur, as executive officer.

Jermain was lent to the R.C.N. on 31 July 1921 to take command of Boys Training Establishment, Halifax for two years.

He retired at own request on 10 July 1922, eventually to be promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) upon reaching age forty-five on 11 November, 1927.

World War II

Temporary Captain on 30 June, 1940. He reverted to the Retired List on 14 February, 1941.
