McHardy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1912.

McHardy was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916 and was re-appointed to Fearless. It appears that a Captain evaluated him as a "fair executive officer" about this time.

McHardy was appointed to the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Antrim on 14 August, 1916.

Reported to be in the hospital on 14 July 1917, McHardy died the next after shooting himself in the head. A Court of Enquiry concluded that this was an act of suicide carried out while in the throes of "temporary insanity."
