Thomas Albert Jolliffe

Commander (retired) Thomas Albert Jolliffe, (9 March, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Greenwich.

Jolliffe was promoted to the rank of Mate on 3 April, 1914. During the war, he served in Locust until 14 July, 1915 when he was sent to haslar hospital to be treated for haemorrhoids. Declared fit on 27 August, he was appointed to T.B. 5 on 9 September.[1]

In May 1916, the commander of T.B. 5, Lt. Hastings, specially recommended Jolliffe for advancement, calling him a "VG officer & and an aggreable messmate. He is cool & reliable in an emergency & is a very efficient officer of the watch." This sort of strong positive appraisal was uniform across his naval career.[2]

Jolliffe was appointed to the thirty-knotter Bulldog on 23 October, 1916 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1917. After the war, his seniority was backdated to 3 October, 1916. On 12 December, 1918, he was appointed from Bulldog to Tancred.[3]

Jolliffe commanded the trawler Andrew King from February 1920 to 2 December, 1921.[4]

Jolliffe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 3 October, 1924.[5]

Jolliffe commanded the fishery protection trawler Cherwell from 1 May, 1926 to 23 April, 1928.[6]

He suffered a puncture wound of his left foot and was admitted to Plymouth on 18 November, 1928 and allotted ten days. he was declared fit on 15 December.[7]

Jolliffe was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 1 October, 1929.[8]
