U.S.S. Connecticut was one of seven Connecticut class pre-dreadnoughts completed for the U.S. Navy.
Construction
A series of nefarious attempts to sabotage and destroy the battleship occurred while she was awaiting launch. In March 1904, holes were found drilled in rivets. Just prior to her launch, a spike was found emplaced on the ways in such a position that grievous damage would have resulted had the ship slid past during launch. It was duly removed. On the day the ship was launched, a two inch diameter hole in her outer shell was discovered. There were hypotheses that these schemes were part of tensions over unionization of the yard, but no culprits were named. Secret Service men were placed among the workers to try to gather information.[8]
