Lieutenant William Leslie Berridge, (28 July, 1899 – 10 April, 1926) served in the Royal Navy. He would serve in battleships and later in submarines. He received glowing evaluations throughout his career before dying in a 1926 swimming accident.

Life & Career

Upon the outbreak of war, Berridge passed out of the Training Establishment and was appointed to the battleship Albion. He served in the pre-dreadnought until 18 May, 1916. On 8 June, 1916, he was appointed to Neptune, which means he probably missed being involved in the Battle of Jutland. On 28 December, 1917 he left the ship and in the turn of 1918 went to Dolphin for training in submarines. He served in boats being tendered to by Ambrose and then on 14 May 1918 was assigned to K 10.[1]

Berridge served in K 10 until January, 1919 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in June, 1919.[2]

Berridge won the Beaufort and Wharton Testimonial for the year 1920.[3]

Berridge was appointed to Titania for command of L 15 on the China Station on 15 October, 1924.[4] Berridge died in the Civil General Hospital in Penang from a spinal fracture sustained in a swimming accident in which he struck the sea bed "after descending the chute at Penang Swimming Club".[5]

Founded in 1903, the Penang Swimming Club is still in operation, and sports a website.
