Admiral Edmund Hyde Smith, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (21 June, 1865 – 13 July, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 22 February, 1885.[1]
Hyde Smith was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1897.[2]
Hyde Smith was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[3]
In June 1905, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Argonaut.[4]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Irresistible on 29 March, 1910.[5] He was quickly moved over to command Africa in June 1910, being there for just over a year.
Hyde Smith was appointed Captain of the battleship Bulwark 25 March, 1911.[6]
He commanded Lord Nelson from November 1911 to mid-1913.[7]
He was appointed captain of the battleship Monarch on 16 June, 1913.[8]
Great War
On 29 June, 1915, Hyde Smith was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Bridson.[9] On 21 September, he was appointed Senior Officer at Sheerness in charge of Naval Establishments.[10]
On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1919.[11] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 2 November, vice Grant, and placed on the Retired List on 3 November.[12]
Retirement
He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1924.[13]
