Captain Herbert John Savill, Royal Navy (20 May, 1870 – 5 June, 1916) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Herbert John Savill was born on 20 May, 1870, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel S. G. Savill.[1]
On 10 June, 1891, he was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 14 December, 1889.[2]
Savill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 December, 1891.[3]
Savill was promoted to the rank of Commander on 26 June, 1902.[4]
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1907.[5]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Prince George in November 1908.[6]
This was followed by command of first class protected cruiser Niobe from 12 April, 1910.[7]
He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Hawke in November 1910,[8] but left her in December for command of Hermes.
On 14 May, 1915, he was placed in command of the armoured cruiser Hampshire,[9] being killed when she was mined on 5 June, 1916.[10]
