U.S.S. Adder was one of seven Plunger (or "A") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy. She was laid down on 3 October, 1900 by the Crescent Shipyard, and launched on 22 July 1901. She was commissioned on 12 January, 1903 at the Holland yard at New Suffolk with Ensign Frank L. Pinney in command.
Adder was redesignated as A-2 on 17 November, 1911.
Service
In 1916, all the "A" class boats but A-1 were stationed in the Philippines in Manila Bay along with all three "B" class boats, their crews living aboard their tenders Monadnock and Mohican.[4]
