Admiral Cyril Everard Tower, D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (3 December, 1861 – 20 January, 1929) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
Cyril Everard Tower was born on 3 December, 1861, the third son of Canon Charles Tower, rector of Chilmark, Wiltshire. He was educated at Lancing College, before joining the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet in July, 1874.
Tower was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1884.[1]
On 7 July 1887, he was loaned to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 62 for manoeuvres.[2]
Tower was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1897.[3]
He was lent to be captain of the old ironclad battleship Northumberland in April 1898,[4] leaving her on 11 March, 1901 for command of the torpedo gunboat Harrier.[5]
Captain
Tower was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[6]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Eclipse on 11 July, 1905.[7]
On 23 June 1906, he was placed in command of the armoured cruiser Donegal.[8]
He was appointed as captain of the battleship London on 1 February 1908, thereby becoming Tower of London.[9]
Tower was appointed in command of the battleship Illustrious on 2 June, 1908. He was to incur the displeasure of Their Lordships for grounding her "due to faulty navigation" in 1908. Compounding this, a Court of Inquiry would find him at fault in a collision in 1909 with Amethyst.[10]
He left Illustrious when he was appointed in command of the battleship Swiftsure on 8 February, 1910.[11]
Tower was appointed Captain of the Dockyard, Deputy Superintendent and King's Harbour Master, Portsmouth on 1 February, 1912.[12] On 2 June, 1915, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Grant-Dalton,[13] and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 28 June.[14] He was relieved by Captain Edward H. Moubray on 29 June, 1916.[15]
On 1 January, 1918, he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.[16] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 2 November, 1919,[17] and to Admiral on 1 August, 1924.[18]
