Edward Courtney Boyle, V.C., (23 March, 1883 – 16 December, 1967) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Boyle was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 December, 1904.[1]
Boyle was appointed in command of the submarine D 3 on 25 March, 1914.[2]
On 19 October, 1914, he was appointed in command of the submarine E 14.[3]
On 27 April, 1915, he took E 14 into the Sea of Marmora and preyed upon Turkish shipping within, sinking a gunboat on 3 May and ending enemy attempts to reinforce Gallipoli by sea. On 21 May, 1915, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in E 14.
On 28 October, 1918, Boyle was appointed in command of the depot ship Platypus.[4] This appointment was renewed on 11 March, 1919.[5] He became Captain (S) of the "J" class submarines of the Royal Australian Navy.[6]
In January, 1923, Boyle was appointed in command of the light cruiser Birmingham.[7]
Boyle was appointed in command of the battleship Iron Duke in August, 1929.[8]
