Captain (retired) Sydney Hopkins (2 April, 1884 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hopkins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 August, 1905.[1]
Hopkins was appointed in command of the destroyer Itchen on 10 August, 1912.[2]
On 14 April, 1913, Hopkins was appointed in command of the destroyer Sparrowhawk[3] and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 August, 1913.
Hopkins commanded Sparrowhawk at the Battle of Jutland, when she was sunk in night fighting as part of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla after colliding with flotilla leader H.M.S. Broke.[4] Hopkins survived and wrote her official report on the battle.
Hopkins was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1917.[5]
Hopkins was appointed in command of the destroyer Somme on 2 October, 1918.[6]
Post-War
Hopkins was appointed in command of the second destroyer Sparrowhawk on 1 February, 1920.[7]
Hopkins was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 November 1922.[8]
Hopkins was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 2 April, 1929.[9]
World War II
Hopkins was appointed in command of the Royal Sovereign on 10 December, 1943.[10]
